AT&T: Election Night inspires record texting

Nov. 7, 2008 (5:42 pm) By: gavin robinson

Monumental events inspire monumental amounts of communication, and in today’s age of eternal close proximity, that communication is done at a much quicker and more active rate. This was, of course, the case on Tuesday night when America elected their next president. With a race as heated and exciting as this one was, it was sure to inspire more than a bit of phone calls and text messages. Now, AT&T has announced that John McCain’s loss/Barack Obama’s win has produced the most text messages in one night.

The most popular events for text messaging are usually holidays, AT&T said that Election Night produced 20% more text messages than did last year’s New Year’s Eve. All in all, there were 44% more texts sent Tuesday than on any other given day; which is an astounding amount considering how often people use their cell phones for text messaging these days.

The messages weren’t limited to celebratory sayings, though. They probably ran the entire gambit. From “OMG, YES WE CAN!” to “I’m moving to Canada,” and even a few, “late-night post-rally nookie?” the texts are as they always are, infinitely varied and inevitably a little bit of a let-down. This is, however, considered yet another win for the Obama campaign, which embraced both the internet and text messaging as viable forms of communication; even announcing Joe Biden as the Vice Presidential nominee via txt.

I was in Grant Park Tuesday night in Chicago, and I can tell you this much. I wasn’t able to send or receive a text message or phone call until I made it back Uptown; thus is the new democracy.
