Over one trillion text messages sent in 2008

Over one trillion text messages were sent last year, according to a semi-annual survey of US mobile users from The Wireless Association.

That works out to approximately triple the number of messages sent in 2007.  Media messages (containing pictures, video, or audio) are also increasing in popularity, with 15 billion sent in 2008, up from 6 billion in 2007.

In 2008, the survey reported that the wireless market had grown to 270 million wireless users, up from 255 million in 2007.  Interestingly, the time we spend talking on cellphones is decreasing – we spend an average of just 2.27 minutes on voice calls

, down from 3.03 minutes in 2006 (no figure was recorded for 2007).  2.2 trillion minutes of calls were made in 2008.

At a time when many industries are struggling, the wireless industry

seems to be doing well, demonstrating impressive growth.  Wireless data revenues in 2008 were up 39% on 2007, totalling over US$32 billion.  Wireless data (i.e. non-voice) revenues constituted 22% of overall mobile revenue in 2008.
