How to Trace a Text Message to Find Who Sent It
By itasor
You are suddenly awoken in the middle of night by the sound of your cell phone. New Text Message. It reads: "I'm watching you."
Ugh! Another harassing, mysterious text message. Here's how you can easily and quickly find out who is sending you text messages...
- Step 1
Find the sender's phone number and write it down. When viewing the text message, the phone number is usually above the message body. You will need this number for the remaining steps.
- Step 2
Search your favorite search engine (such as Google or Yahoo) for the sender's 10 digit phone number in 123-456-7890 format. You can also try searching in other formats, such as 1234567890 or (123)456-7890.
Look through the results for any forums or profiles where the number appears. View these pages and look for the poster or profile's username. This username may give you a clue to the person's identity.
- Step 3
Call or text the phone number. Be careful, you may only want to do this if you feel the message is a joke from a friend. Simply asking "who is this" may reveal who the sender is.
- Step 4
Get a text message trace report. These are the most helpful for tracing a text message. They provide you with a report that contains the cell phone owner's name, address, household information, and more.
